Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, is a collaborative treatment approach between a therapist and an individual or group. Its aim is to address psychological issues, emotional challenges, and behavioral patterns to improve mental health and well-being.

Psychotherapy - Telehealth

Telehealth therapy offers remote mental health treatment through technology like video calls. It's convenient for those who can't attend in-person sessions. Services include counseling and psychotherapy for various issues. Despite the distance, it maintains confidentiality and professional support similar to in-person therapy.

I welcome patients in my sessions by validating that it can feel scary to open up and get vulnerable, especially with someone you don’t know, but the reward is greater than the risk.

Solution: I really enjoy being a psychologist because I love that I get to know people on such an intimate level and see clients make progress. Beginning therapy can feel daunting, so I emphasize that we can go at whatever pace is most comfortable for you, so sessions unfold in a way that feels natural. I gravitate toward using the cognitive behavioral therapy model because I find it’s effective in working through feelings of depression and anxiety.

Client Focus: Children, Teens, Adults, Seniors

Types of Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-centered

Issues: Depression, anxiety, life transitions

More than just my work: When I’m not helping people transform their lives, I’m enjoying spin sessions, indulging in my passion for tacos and guacamole, or hanging with my two big, silly black and white cats, Figgy and Felix.

Education:

California Lutheran University, B.S. in Psychology, Minor in Sociology

What problem do you strive to overcome? Problem: Many individuals, especially those with chronic pain, teenagers, and parents navigating identity struggles, can feel disconnected from their sense of self or trapped in cycles of stress. They may feel misunderstood or frustrated by their challenges and unsure how to begin making meaningful changes in their lives.

Solution: I use a person-centered approach, incorporating polyvagal theory to help clients reconnect with their bodies and emotions. Together, we work on building awareness of how stress and emotions manifest physically, and explore ways to restore a sense of safety and control.

Result: My goal is to provide a compassionate, individualized space where clients feel heard and supported. By focusing on their unique needs and creating an environment that fosters regulation, they can begin to navigate their challenges with more ease, resilience, and self-compassion.

I’m passionate about creating a space where clients can show up just as they are—whether they’re feeling confident or uncertain, energized or overwhelmed. I believe healing starts by listening to both body and mind, and together we can discover what you need to feel safe, strong, and whole again. Outside of therapy, I find balance through humor, healthy cooking, spending time with loved ones, and taking lessons from my dog about the power of presence. Life’s not about perfection; it’s about embracing the messiness.”

When I help patients in therapy, I really believe that everyone deserves a certain amount of dignity and respect that maybe they’re not getting from home or work and as a therapist and social worker, I can provide that with no judgment. As therapists, we start where the client is, and everyone has a right to live their life as they want, and I want to support that.

I come to Maple Leaf Counseling with a breadth of experience helping patients through PTSD, ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma and substance abuse issues. This variety of experience informs my practice with patients and I use a variety of techniques and modalities to help clients gain insight into their feelings, behaviors and choices. I’ve seen how personal insight has led patients to a better sense of peace and worked with couples who’ve rebuilt connections and loving feelings with one another. I get a front row seat to personal transformation, how cool is that?

I try to be as relatable as possible to the clients that I work with. As a Korean American, I’m very sensitive and worked with a lot of clients from a lot of different backgrounds. As a social worker, we stress being culturally competent with our approach to practice and I strive to create a space where patients feel welcome and safe to express themselves.

Client focus: Children, Teens, Adults, Couples

Types of therapy: Supportive Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

More than just my work: In my personal life, I’m passionate about family: my two children, wife and our small, cute family dog. My original hometown is San Diego, so I cheer for the Padres and Chargers and will never turn down a chance to eat Mexican food.

With all the seasons that we may experience in this life, showing up for ourselves can sometimes require a great amount of patience, stillness, introspection, compassion, bravery and courage, that sometimes can feel unfathomable and lead us to experience a “stuckness” or exist in what can feel like a never-ending liminal space. Addressing our healing process and the parts that accompany it, no matter the season, is no easy task, and can require us to trust and surrender to so many unknowns while beginning to cultivate a deep-rooted relationship with ourselves, our bodies, and our intuitions. The beautiful news is that you don’t have to do this work alone. I’d be honored to be your guide! I approach therapy through a holistic and somatic lens meaning that we incorporate the body, mind, soul, and spirit into our sessions (with what you’re comfortable) and work as slow as you need. I believe that talk therapy is only the beginning of opening the door to unbecoming. When we address the body, we can release stuck emotions that often we’re completely unaware that we’re housing. Through talk therapy and befriending our bodies, we can build deeper awareness of self and start to understand the root of our challenges and thought processes. I will meet you where you’re at, and help ease any anxieties, depression, stressors, low self-esteem, anger, frustrations, confusion, and help you to befriend your body, so that you can, with time, step into your power and own your truth wholeheartedly. I do my best to create a brave space for you to not only feel safe enough to be seen, held, and empowered by way of meditation, breath work, movement and yoga, poetry/writing, and mindfulness into our sessions and one step at a time, assist you in reaching your goals. I enjoy serving as a guide to help individuals through difficult transitions and find joy in being able to walk alongside you to help you embark on a path that feels authentic to you, while challenging you to become the best ‘you’ that you can be. Experience: I have a wide range of experience working in infant mental health, community mental health, (non-profits, schools, intercollegiate college sports working with student athletes, etc) and private practice where I’ve worked with infants and their mothers, women, men, BIPOC individuals, children, adolescents, families, individuals, and couples. Along with this I bring my knowledge of working as a Birth Worker/Doula, my experience as a Sex & Intimacy Coach, and Yoga/Meditation Teacher to support individuals, couples, mothers, and their families navigate pregnancy, birth, and early postpartum. I believe that the Mental Health profession chose me and I’m forever grateful to be of service to others.

Client Focus: Teens, Adults, Couples

Types of therapy: Somatic Therapy, Dialectal Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Child-Parent Psychotherapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Humanistic Therapy

Issues: Perinatal and postpartum mental health, sex and intimacy challenges, infidelity, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, low self-esteem, identity.

More than just my work: Outside of holding space and being of service, you will find me writing poetry, tending to my plant babies, being in nature and with community, taking some meditative time through yoga, dance, or swimming, and enjoying some quality time and delicious food with my family and loved ones.
